Urgent Action Network Banner

When someone is facing immediate and often life-threatening human rights violations, Amnesty International turns to its Urgent Action Network. Members of the Urgent Action Network provide an effective and rapid response by sending letters, e-mails, and faxes directly to those who have the power to stop the violations.

Special Thanks from Freed Human Rights Defender

Saidzhakhon Zainabitdinov, Chairperson of the Appelliatsia (Appeal) independent human rights organization in the eastern Uzbekistani city of Andizhan, has thanked all those who campaigned on his behalf. Saidzhakhon Zainabitdinov was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment in January 2006 but was unexpectedly freed in February 2008 along with several other political prisoners and human rights defenders. His release was not unconditional but was the result of a presidential amnesty.

In a letter to Amnesty International activists, Mr. Zainabitdinov wrote:
"Hundreds of letters supporting me, on the initiative of international organizations and mainly Amnesty International, arrived at my house from across the world during the time when I was in prison. I want to express my deepest gratitude to all the authors of all the messages. I wish you peace and happiness."
